⭐️Gerald "Shorty" "Nails" Davis (LEGEND) —
Philipsburg-Osceola | Baseball & Basketball Coach
We are proud to welcome this outstanding class, representing decades of achievement, leadership, service, and lasting contributions to sports in Centre County.
⭐️ Gerald C. 'Shorty' 'Nails' Davis September 3, 1920 - July 14, 2008 Gerald "Shorty" "Nails" Davis, 87, of Lewistown, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008. He was born on September 3, 1920, in Philipsburg, a son of the late Joseph and Naomi (Bottomley) Davis. "Nails" was in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1938, having lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He then received a bachelor of science degree at Lock Haven Teachers College and graduated from Penn State University receiving a masters degree in Counseling Education.
⭐️ In Philipsburg he taught and coached, then later served as a Guidance Counselor. He had an outstanding career as a coach in football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Pa. Sports Clearfield Region, Hall of Fame, in 1988, for his service coaching at Philipsburg-Osceola High School. His friends and former athletes named the PO Baseball field after him in his honor, "The Shorty Davis Baseball Field". In Philipsburg-Osceola area he was a legendary figure known simply as "Nails", tough both on his players and umpires who worked his games. Davis's teams were always well drilled and ultra competitive. If the Mounties were within striking distance, more often than not, he had you right where he wanted you.
⭐️ He coached P-O from 1950-78 and his teams won seven District 6 Titles and nine CPL Crowns.
